Buffalo Waterfront Named One of America’s ‘Most Remarkable’
While the occasional lake freighter still makes its way to Buffalo’s harbor, the Buffalo waterfront is now home to kayakers, paddle boarders, boaters, bikers and hikers. Repurposing the relics of the city’s powerful industrial past, the Buffalo waterfront is the site of a radical transformation from desolate to destination.
Taking note of this incredible evolution, Hemispheres Magazine – the onboard magazine of United Airlines – has named Buffalo among ‘5 of the Most Remarkable Waterfronts in the U.S.’

As part of an interview, Hemispheres quotes, “‘It’s been really exciting to see the evolving nature of our waterfront and what it’s become,’ says Patrick Kaler, president and CEO of Visit Buffalo Niagara. ‘People often have a perception of what Buffalo is. The last few years, the canal has changed our downtown and given us a new story to be able to tell—that we have become a year-round destination.'”
Today, Buffalo’s waterfront is best experienced in three distinct locations: Canalside, which is located at the foot of Main Street in downtown; the Buffalo River, which twists and turns from downtown through the Old First Ward and Valley neighborhoods; and the Outer Harbor, the massive parcel of greenspace, bike paths and marinas on the Lake Erie shore.
